Translate Your Military Experience

Three steps. Your entries stay when you move between them.

Select your branch

Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force each have supported codes on this page.

Select your branch first. Army and Marine Corps use a MOS. Navy and Coast Guard use a rating. Air Force uses an AFSC. Space Force uses an SFSC.

Rank can change the suggested title band. It does not add duties or results. Confirm the work you actually did.

Suggested civilian language

Example only. Review before using. Nothing here is added until you enter a code.

Select your branch and enter your job code.

Suggested civilian language shows here when a supported code is found.

Illustrative example

Use only the duties you performed.

  • IT — Information Systems Technician

IT Support Specialist / Network Technician

  • Training Petty Officer

    Training Coordinator

  • 3M System Coordinator

    Planned Maintenance Coordinator

Try This Example loads Navy rating IT (Information Systems Technician) and these additional duties: Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO), Training Petty Officer (TPO), and 3M System Coordinator (3M). Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) is loaded too and is not one of the three rows above. This is an example, not a record of your service.

A job code doesn't tell your whole story.

Start with a civilian résumé.

Use a free veteran résumé template, then describe your experience in civilian language.

Both files are a single column with no tables, which is easier for an applicant tracking system to read. That does not mean every hiring system will read them the same way. These downloads do not fill themselves from your translator selections.

Built by a veteran who understands the transition.

ApplyOptics was created by Tim Vaughan, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer with 22 years of service, to help make military experience clearer to civilian employers.

Job-code lookup runs in this browser and does not create an account. Wording suggestions for a duty you describe are built in this browser from what you type. A duty you add stays in this browser tab: a refresh keeps it, and closing the tab clears it. If you choose to send a duty for review, the duty name and civilian wording go to ApplyOptics for a person to read. Your name and email are not asked. They are not stored in the ApplyOptics database. If that review path is not set up, the page says nothing was sent. Name, phone, email, and clearance on the résumé draft are included only in the file you download.

FAQ

What do MOS, rating, and AFSC mean?
Branches use different names for a military job. MOS means Military Occupational Specialty, used by the Army and Marine Corps. A rating is the Navy and Coast Guard job name. AFSC means Air Force Specialty Code. Space Force uses an SFSC, a Space Force Specialty Code.
Which branches do you support?
Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force each have supported codes here. If a code is not listed for the branch you selected, the page says so and does not use another service's wording in its place.
Can I add duties outside my military job?
Yes. Choose duties for your branch, or describe a duty that is not listed. This page suggests civilian wording from what you type. You can edit it. Missing details stay blank.
Will this write my entire résumé?
No. The page suggests civilian titles, skills, and example bullets you can edit. Download My Résumé Draft matches the preview. Download Starter Template and Download Blank Template are separate files. You still supply your name, dates, and the lines that match your work.
How accurate are the suggestions?
Review each suggestion and keep only what you did. This page does not score you. Supported jobs come from the listed codes and duties. A duty you add yourself is marked for you to review.
Can I include certifications or a clearance?
The translator does not assign a clearance or certification from a job code. On the résumé card, type one only if you hold it.
Is it free?
Yes. The translator and the two résumé downloads on this page are free.
Do I need an account?
No. You can translate a code, add duties, and download the résumé files without an account.
What happens to my information?
Job-code lookup stays in this browser. A duty you describe stays in this tab until you close it. If you send it for review, the duty wording goes to ApplyOptics without your name or email, and it is not stored in the ApplyOptics database. Résumé fields are included in the file you download.
